What is ESI? (Employees’ State Insurance)
Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) is a social security and health insurance scheme for Indian workers, managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
It provides medical care and cash benefits to employees and their families during sickness, maternity, disability, or employment injury.
Key Features:
✅ Applicable to: Establishments with 10 or more employees (in some states, 20)
✅ Eligibility: Employees earning ₹21,000 or less per month (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities)
✅ Contribution:
⇒ Employer: 3.25% of gross salary
⇒ Employee: 0.75% of gross salary
✅ Benefits:
⇒ Free medical treatment for employee and family
⇒ Maternity benefits, sickness leave, and disability compensation
⇒ Dependent benefits in case of employee death due to employment injury
📌 Note:
Registration under ESI is mandatory for eligible establishments, and returns must be filed bi-annually.
